A Short Bunny Trail with Long Consquences: #BLM vs #ALM

As much as I like to poke fun…

of the #AllLivesMatter & #BlackLivesMatter dribble that I see on my FB Newsfeed (June 2016), please know that the paradigm of this racial war is not based solely on these superficial labels. Just think of it as a bad marketing. Whether we call it #ALM or #BLM, it doesn’t matter.

What really matters…

is that the people whom #BlackLivesMatter are representing are suffering, and they’ve been suffering at the hands of our blind, oppressive society for far too long.

In actuality…

#BLM, contrary to the rhetoric, is not about a division or supremacy of race. It’s an outcry for help, and we, the people of privilege, need to do something about it because we are the ones with the blind power. We need to affect change.

Don’t believe me?

Today, I passed through the national border between Germany and Switzerland on a bus with predominately black and brown passengers. A guard boarded our bus to check passengers’ IDs, and even though I absentmindedly left my passport in my luggage under the bus, the guard let me cross with a simple, “Oh, no problem!” No one else on the bus was offered the same leniency, and a few were even denied entry despite showing two forms of ID. THAT, my friends, is #whiteprivilege.

If someone fell right in front of us…

we wouldn’t walk by them just because we didn’t like the brand of their t-shirt, would we!?! We would help them because they’re hurt. It’s not about us and our taste in fashion. Simple as that.

Ergo, please don’t get distracted…

by the labels when forming & expressing opinions about #BLM or #ALM, especially on a public forum. This fight for equality is not about us, white people, and our hurt feelings about being unfairly perceived as racist oppressors (even though we unknowingly are). Let’s not pretend that we’re the victims.

Henceforth…

if you are a member of the privileged party and I see a post tagged #ALM or #BLM followed by some pathetic whining about being unfairly criticized against or whining about the marginalized parties, or worse, complete denial of racial disparity, I WILL look for you, I WILL find you, and I WILL hug you…

  • and hug you…
  • and hug you more…
  • so tight…

until you swear to be a more empathetic human being and less of a self-seeking jerk. I would use another word here, but I promised my father I wouldn’t swear as much in my blog posts.

Yes, I just threatened you with hugs.

That, or I will team up with my social media hounds, Chris, Maggie, & Larisa, hunt you down and challenge you to an intellectual debate. Oh wait! They need GoT pseudonyms. Let’s go with: Sandor Clegane, Brienne of Tarth, & Lyanna Mormont.

As always, thank you for reading and joining me on this #internationalcoffeejourney
